“Cherlene! I love your new toenail polish! I’ve never seen that color before.”
“Uhhh, Girl what are talkin’ bout?”
“Your new toenail polish, what color is it?”
“Girl, I ain’t wearin’ no toenail polish.”
“Well . . . how did you get them that yellow color?”
“Girl that’s just my toe fungus! . . . Why you actin’ like you gonna throw up?”
Do you have toe fungus? Are your nails yellow, thick, and hard as a rock? If they are, then it’s a good bet that you have Tinea unguium.
Toe Fungus: Where does it come from?
Toe fungus can be pretty disgusting left unchecked. But how did you get it, and what is it really? The answer is probably not one you’d expect. That dry and discolored nail is infected with Athlete’s Foot, and Athlete’s Foot is basically. . .Ringworm. That’s right, your toe now has the fungus that is also responsible for the Red-ringed spots with the raised edges. Many people don’t associate the two, but they both are transmitted through contact.
- Contact with an infected individual
- Contact with an object that has been in contact with the Tinea fungus
Ringworm is a highly contagious organism. Tinea unguium is responsible for the infection and it loves warm, moist places to set up house. What better place than your toenail where it rests in your socks and shoes for a major part of the day.
Toe Fungus: Who’s at risk?
There are a definite set of circumstances and conditions that contribute to the growth of Tinea unguium. They contribute to the cause and continued growth of toe fungus. In order to stop your toenail degradation, you will need to address each of these conditions.
- Men more than women are at risk
- The elderly
- Warm, moist environments
- Public pools, showers, and locker rooms
- If you have socks or shoes that are too tight
- Dirty or sweaty shoes and socks
- If you wear tennis shoes you’re at greater risk
- Repeated or serious trauma to your toenail
- Certain Immune System Suppressing Diseases (Diabetes and HIV)
As you can see there are lots of risk factors for Tinea that can cause you to get those nasty toenails. It is surprising how many people have this condition.
Toe Fungus Symptoms
If you’ve ever seen a toenail infected by Tinea you know how deformed and torn up they can get. They exhibit symptoms that leave no doubt as to what condition you have.
- Dry
- Discolored
- Thickened
- Sloughing off of material from the top of the nail
- Crumbling into powdery material under the nail
Often times toe fungus is accompanied by Athlete’s Foot and the toes and feet around the toenail also exhibit symptoms. These can occur in any combination of:
- Redness
- Itching
- Burning or stabbing pain
- Possible blisters and oozing
- Dry, scaly skin
The Tinea fungus can occur on any part of the body, but can be particularly devastating to the foot and toenail as a toe fungus.
How to Treat Toe Fungus
There are multiple ways you can treat toe fungus depending on how you want to approach it. You’ll have to take into consideration:
- Do you want to try and treat it with toenail fungus home remedies?
- Are you willing to try the myriad of Over the Counter Cream and Soaks?
- Are you able, or do you want to seek help from a doctor?
We will start with some of the things you can do at home to treat your toe fungus, and progress to the medical treatments.

- Powder
- Spray
They have only shown limited success against toe fungus, specifically the infection that gets under the nails. The 3 types are:
- Miconazole
- Clotrimazole
- Tolnaftate
These come in many different forms and brands. It may be worth it to try all three types before you resort to going to a doctor.
3. Prescription Medications
- Often the same medicine as the OTC drugs, just stronger and perhaps in pill form
- Pills, Topical ointments, and soaks
- Doctor will often combine an external treatment (cream) with an internal treatment (pills)
- May require weeks or even months of treatment to see remission
Whatever treatment you use, it’s important to keep at. Often times Athlete’s Foot and Tinea unguium can still be present even after the symptoms subside. Preventing this is probably the best way to deal with it really. I feel sorry for the guy in that picture with the horribly infected nails. It’s not pretty, and not comfortable either.

If anyone isn’t inspired to do something before it’s too late for their problem, they just have to look at the pictures on your site here. Disgusting toenail fungus. I have a mild case I guess, combined with athlete’s foot. It’s hard to keep your feet free when you hit the gym and pool all the time.
