Toenail fungus pictures show yellow/brown, crusty monstrosities attached to various little piggies. Do you see the same thing when you look at your feet? Are you embarrassed to wear flip-flops or sandals? Do you need various power tools to cut your toenails now? If this is the case then perhaps it’s time to do something about it?
Toenail Fungus Pictures
If you do look at toenail fungus pictures, then one of two things is happening. You are either trying to find out information for you or someone you know, about how to fix the problem you see in those pictures, or you have WAY too much time on your hands. If it’s the former then it will help to learn about what you are seeing in those pictures.
Cause
Toenail fungus is caused by a . . . wait for it . . . a . . . fungus. That’s right, who would have guessed? What you might not know is that the fungus that causes it is Tinea unguium, which is a form of Ringworm. Ringworm can affect all parts of the body, and is given a different name for each place it occurs:
- Tinea corporis – arms, legs, and trunk
- Tinea cruris – crotch and inner thighs (Jock Itch)
- Tinea manuum – hands and palms
- Tinea capitis – scalp
- Tinea barbae – facial hair
- Tinea faciei – face
- Tinea pedis – feet (Athlete’s Foot)
- Tinea unguium – nails (toe and finger)
The specific fungal type of Tinea that affects the toenail is a fungus known as Trichophyton rubrum. These little microscopic culprits are the reason for most toenail fungus pictures.
Toenail Fungus Pictures Symptoms
There are several dead giveaways when it comes to knowing if you’re looking at, or starting to develop nail fungus. All these toenail fungus symptoms occur in various combinations and varying degrees of severity:
- Dry nails
- Discolored nails
- Thickened nails
- Sloughing of outer nail
- Dry, crumbling tissue under the nail
- Onycholysis – toenail separates and possibly falls off
As toenail fungus pictures often show the accompanying condition called Athlete’s Foot, here are some other symptoms you may notice with the infection.
- Redness
- Itching
- Dry, scaly skin
- Peeling skin
- Blisters and/or oozing moisture
Athlete’s Foot does not always accompany toenail infections, but as the causative fungus is almost always the same, Tinea, they are often coexistent.
Who is at risk for toenail fungus pictures?
Perhaps the better question is, “Where is the risk of contracting these fungal infections the greatest?” There are several risk factors that you can be aware of which might help you avoid being in one of these toenail fungus pictures.
- Men get them more than women
- Show up more in the elderly
- Survive and spread from warm, moist environments
- Public pools, showers, and bathrooms are prime conditions for growth
- Locker rooms are a huge risk area (especially for wrestlers)
- Tight fitting, poorly ventilated socks and shoes seem to exacerbate the risks
- Dirty or sweaty socks and shoes are high risk
- Tennis shoes are high risk
- Toenails that are injured or repeated to trauma (exercising)
- Certain Immune Deficiency Diseases (HIV, Diabetes)
Some of these risks for appearing in toenail fungus pictures are unavoidable, but the shoes and socks issues can be avoided with:
- Keeping your feet clean and dry
- Walk barefoot as much as possible
- Frequent changing of socks and shoes
- Frequent washing and drying of your feet
Managing your risks will go a long way to helping you avoid toenail fungus pictures. There is some validity to a genetic predisposition toward the condition, so if you mom or dad had these infections, be alert and vigilant.
Toenail Fungus Pictures: Treatment
There are several treatment options to help you get over toenail fungus. They range from the kooky home remedies to powerful antifungal prescription medications; here are just a few:
- Home Remedies – Vick’s Vapor Rub, Tea Tree Oil, Olive Leaf Extract, Apple Cider Vinegar
- Over the Counter (OTC) Medications – Miconazole, Clotrimazole (creams and soaks)
- Prescription Medications
- Laser Therapy (newest and most promising treatment)

When I had the athlete’s foot, I used white vinegar, not apple cider vinegar, liberally on my skin and nails. I found it helped with nail fungus I was starting to develop too.
