Is There a Special Ulcerative Colitis Diet?

Some people get an upset stomach after every meal.  They can’t eat certain things, or they spend the night on the Is There a Special Ulcerative Colitis Diet cartoontoilet.  Sometimes their gastric distress keeps them from their normal daily activities.  Maybe you’ve experienced these same problems, and yours seems to be getting worse.  How can you prevent these disruptions to your life?  Maybe you need to look into an Ulcerative Colitis Diet?

Ulcerative Colitis Diet:  What is Ulcerative Colitis?

Ulcerative Colitis (UC) is an Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) that is characterized by:

  • Ulcers
  • Open sores on the internal wall of the rectum and colon
  • Blood in the stool
  • Left abdominal cramping pain
  • Tenesmus (feeling like you didn’t finish pooping)
  • Diarrhea

The inflammation and possible infection take place anywhere from the rectum back up through the large intestines (colon), and occasionally into the ileum (lowest section of the small intestines.)  It’s this distinction that will play a major role in distinguishing it from another major IBM known as Crohn’s Disease.

Ulcerative Colitis Diet:  How is UC Diagnosed?

Diagnosis of Ulcerative Colitis can be difficult, especially if the symptoms are minor.  The problem doesn’t lie in the fact that you are experiencing symptoms, the problem lies in the fact that the symptoms you would notice are very similar to other IBD conditions.

  • Abdominal Pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea/Vomiting
  • Possible bloody stool

These are symptoms of another major Inflammatory Bowel illness; Crohn’s Disease.  The only way to know the difference for sure is to see your physician and she will run several tests, and only when those results are in, can there be a definitive diagnosis, and resultant Ulcerative Colitis Diet.

*WARNING: The following video shows actual images of a colonoscopy, viewer discretion is advised.  Also, the audio is hard to understand, especially with the medical terms being used.  The important thing is to note the red ulcerations along the walls.

  • Colonoscopy (possible biopsy)
  • Gastroscopy (possible biopsy)
  • Barium Swallow Fluoroscopy (type of X-ray with dye)
  • Blood Test (CBC)

Your doctor may order one or all of these tests to try and determine your condition.  Once done, then you can begin discussing your treatment options, including your Ulcerative Colitis Diet.

Ulcerative Colitis Diet:  Treatment

There are basically 3 types of treatment available for Ulcerative Colitis:

  • Ulcerative Colitis Diet
  • Medicine
  • Surgery

Which type of treatment that is used will be determined by you and your doctor, with the doctor obviously making medically necessary calls. There could be a situation where surgery is warranted, but not imperative.  In such a case your doctor might offer the alternative of Medicine and Diet as opposed to surgery.

Ulcerative Colitis Diet

There are many people who suffer from UC that control their symptoms very comfortably with a comprehensive Ulcerative Colitis Diet.  The thing is, there is no scientifically proven “one diet” that works for everyone.  The food you use with your diet might not be the one that works for anyone else.  So how do you know which foods you need for your Ulcerative Colitis Diet?

You’re going to need to start a Food Journal.  That’s going to be the only way to know which foods help or harm Is There a Special Ulcerative Colitis Diet journalingyour Ulcerative Colitis.

  1. What you eat
  2. How much you eat
  3. When you eat (some people notice their IBD is time sensitive)
  4. Try different times of the day to eat
  5. How often you eat
  6. What beverages you drink
  7. Note how you feel physically before during and after each meal
  8. Note any patterns of irritation or reduction in symptoms

Record anything of note that you notice when you eat.  Keep this journal for at least 2 to 4 weeks before trying to formalize your diet.  Give the patterns time to show.  Even though there is no prescribed diet, there are certain things that need to be ingested with caution as they seem to cause a lot of UC sufferers to experience flare-ups.  Things like:

  • Dairy
  • Raw Vegetables and Fruit
  • Nuts and Grains

It’s only through this process that you are going to learn the foods and beverages you need on your Ulcerative Colitis Diet.

Medicine

Medicine has been used very successfully to manage the symptoms of UC.  As there is no cure, short of surgery, so far it is only a management technique.

  • 5-ASA  (this is a type of Aspirin)
  • Corticosteroids (must be used sparingly and under supervision as overuse can lead to other problems)
  • Antibiotics (only used when bacterial causes are detected)

At some point, regardless of medicine or Ulcerative Colitis Diet, if the symptoms get worse you may very well need to move to the next level of treatment.

Surgery

Surgery for UC sufferers is a last ditch, curative experience.  Many times a surgeon will have to take out much, or all of the colon in order to assure that the condition does not return.  This can leave you with an internal or external Ostomy Bag (bag attached to your intestines to store feces.)

Is There a Special Ulcerative Colitis Diet?

An Ulcerative Colitis Diet is just one aspect of UC treatment.  It can be a very important aspect, but make sure you speak with your physician about it before you begin.  Make sure that you don’t need to supplement it with medicine or surgery.  So, talk with your doctor, start your Food Journal and get started on your Ulcerative Colitis Diet.
